FindNot News and Articles
What's the difference between a standard Findnot subscription and Findnot PRO?
FindNot's privacy and anonymity services are generally used for web browsing and email. However, with the increase in higher bandwidth services such as VOIP, Streaming Audio and Video and Online Gaming users require faster speeds. The new PRO servers provide better speeds for these types of applications. Of course, if you only browse and email you can still benefit from the faster speeds.

What's the difference between the PPTP VPN and OpenVPN?
Both are functionally the same, in that they both are a Virtual Private Network. As far as anonymity, both offer encryption and they hide your IP address. Put each (PPTP VPN and openVPN) in your favorite search engine and you can see the technical differences. The PPTP VPN was a standard for many years but is not being implemented as much with other protocols that are now available such as IPSEC and of course openVPN. We still offer it as a way to connect because some prefer it over other connection methods, and you can set up the connection with no software at all.
openVPN is an open-source VPN solution that has many options for connecting, including several open-source gui-options. openVPN is considered to be extremely secure when compared to the PPTP VPN, and also more stable. It is a little more difficult to set up, but we have documentation available on our setup page to assist you with the connection.
How can I get a free trial?
Sure, we have fully-functional free trials available. Just send an email to support [at] findnot.com with your request.

The PPTP VPN will not connect!
Several factors can influence the connection. Please check through this troubleshooting guide for VPN. It is a general guide, but if you check it thoroughly it fixes 95% of the PPTP VPN problems, including error code 619:
1. Make sure you are connected to the internet when trying to connect to our proxy or VPN servers. You must have an internet connection running to use our service.
2. Check your setup at the PPTP VPN Setup Page
3. Check your username and password. Both are case sensitive. Try typing them both instead of copy/paste to be sure that there are no extra characters or spaces.
4. Try connecting to other servers. We have 34 Servers to choose from. Check the server list.
5. If you are using a software firewall (like Zone Alarm, Norton Personal Firewall, etc.), try disabling them as a test. If you are then able to connect, check to see that PPTP VPN connections are allowed. Our PPTP VPN uses standard VPN port 1723.
6. If you connect to the internet via a router, check the admin page of your router. Port 1723 should not be blocked and PPTP pass-through should be enabled. If you are not sure how to do this email the support department at your router manufacturer's website and tell them you need to be able "login to the VPN server at work". This is very common and they have to have a solution.
7. The VPN requires some windows services to be active. Usually they are by default, but at this point if you are still not connecting, check to see that the following Windows services are enabled:
- Remote Access Connection Manager - Telephony
To check these, go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Services > Services.
8. If you have checked through the above, barring any username issue on our server the VPN connection may not be possible. Try connecting with another connection method.
Are there bandwidth limits?
We do have a soft bandwidth limit. From our terms of service:
Users should restrict their data transfer to 1 GIG per day. This is a soft figure. When we see a user use as much bandwidth as say 60 other "regular" users we politely ask them to stop or depart from the service and we do issue pro-rata refunds if this occurs. So what we are NICELY trying to say is hey we'll work with you as long as you are not trying to ruin it for all the others. Can't blame us here. If you have a need to occasionally use a larger amount of bandwidth drop us an email and just consider it ok, as long as it is not an everyday occurrence and it is not more than triple the limit in a 24 hour period. If you think we are unreasonable do speak out - this is a soft terms of service clause that is only intended to be used against the most inconsiderate users (think bandwidth hogs).

What kind of speed can I expect?
When using VPN or SSH, you are adding extra stops for both incoming and outgoing traffic, introducing encryption as you go. For sure this will cause a decrease in speed.
Total speeds depend on server used, distance you are from the server selected and also how far that server is from your final destination. When surfing, browsing, emailing, Instant Messaging you will hardly notice a speed drop from a regular cable modem, just a slight pause.
Most users will experience a speed of about 2/3 their normal internet connection. Depending upon which server you choose and it's proximity to you, you may achieve more or less. Speed drop is more noticeable with P2P and FTP.

I log in to your server, but the site I am visiting still knows who I am?
There are multiple ways for a site to recognize who you are. The most common is the use of cookies. The site you visit will place a small file in your temporary internet files that records who you logged in as, and sometimes the IP address. The next time you access the site, the site scans for their cookie and 'conveniently' fills access forms and such. Delete cookies from your browser after each session and you will be safe.
There are other ways for a site to recognize login info. For instance some browsers have the ability to save your login info, and when you return to a site the browser automatically fills in the info. Also browser add-ons such as the google toolbar and others have the ability to save login info.

Will the service work with my p2p app?
If you connect using our VPN, all internet traffic is routed through our servers with no additional configuration. If your app supports SOCKS5 proxies it may be able to connect either directly to the proxy server or with the SSH tunnel. If your app is not socks aware, you can utilize one of the following applications to 'proxify' it:

It appears you are having me setup a dial-up connection. How do I connect via high speed?
Microsoft uses the dial-up analogy in it's vpn wizard. You will not be connecting via dialup! Follow the instructions and you will see that you will be connecting via high-speed. (assuming you have a high speed connection to start with!)

How can I connect my application directly to your SOCKS 5 Proxies?
To connect directly to our Socks5 servers, just enter the information below into your socks aware application:
Socks server: vpnX.findnot.com (where X is the server number) Port: 1088 User ID: your_user_id Password: your_password
PLEASE NOTE: If your user id has Capitals (upper case), your socks proxy user id is to be entered in lower case. Also, if your user id contains characters "* @ ." (yes that is a period just before the quote) you need to omit those characters.
If your app is not socks aware, you can utilize Freecap or a similar software to 'proxify' it.

Is there a way to automatically reconnect the SSH tunnel?
Yes, there are two options:
You can use a third-party tunnel manager such as Tunnel Manager from www.rs4u.com. Many of our users use it and are happy with the results.
Another option (kindly submitted by one of our users) is to create a batch script (.bat) that will automatically reconnect:
open a new .txt file and copy and paste the following (without the '=====')
=====
@echo off
:redial
putty -D 1088 -P 80 -ssh vpn1.findnot.com -l username -pw password
putty -D 1088 -P 80 -ssh vpn2.findnot.com -l username -pw password
putty -D 1088 -P 80 -ssh vpn3.findnot.com -l username -pw password
putty -D 1088 -P 80 -ssh vpn4.findnot.com -l username -pw password
putty -D 1088 -P 80 -ssh vpn5.findnot.com -l username -pw password
PING 1.1.1.1 -n1 -w 5000 >NUL
goto redial
=====
Replace the vpn1.findnot.com in each line with your favorite server numbers (you can have as many or few as you want). Then replace the username and password with your login info.
Save the file and change the name and extension to FindNotSSH.bat, then doubleclick on it to start the SSH tunnel. If it disconnects, it should reconnect for you.

Since the connection between my computer and your server is encrypted, shouldn't I see the little padlock in my browser, indicating encryption?
The padlock denotes an SSL connection. Secured Sockets Layer (SSL) is a protocol that transmits your communications over the Internet in an encrypted form. It front-ends HTTP to give you HTTPS. It can also do this for POP3, SMTP, IMAP, and just about any other TCP application. If you log in to our e-mail server, you will notice that it is SSL encrypted.
The encryption used in our connections are not via SSL. Put 'SSL' and 'SSH' in your favorite search engine. There are many sources for technical info about both.
I would like to upgrade my subscription. How do I do that?

How do I choose another server?
Choosing another server depends on how you are connecting to us. Server locations and url information can be found here:
http://www.findnot.com/servers.html
To change servers:
PPTP VPN via FindNot.pbk - Simply doubleclick on the FindNot.pbk and if you are connected choose the 'Hang Up' option. Then use the drop-down menu to choose another server, and choose 'Connect'.
PPTP VPN Manual Setup - You can either edit your current connection by going to Start->Connect To->Show all connections, then right click and choose 'Properties' on the Findnot connection, then change the URL to that of another server; or simply create a new connection following the manual instructions here:
http://www.findnot.com/setup.php?setup=vpn
SSH Tunnel - In the setup download, there is a .bat file for each server. Simply start the .bat file for the server you wish to connect to.
OpenVPN - You can either edit your client.opvn file to include the url of the server you want, or (recommended) create a new .opvn file for each server you want to use. Instructions on what to edit can be found here:
http://www.findnot.com/setup.php?setup=openvpn

How do I change my password?
If you wish to change your password, e-mail me your old password and your desired new password, and I will change it for you.
I highly recommend using your Findnot e-mail so that this information never leaves our server.
Only alpha-numeric characters are supported, 6 to 12 characters. For extra security, used a mixed case password.

The SSH will not connect!
try the following:
1. Try connecting to other servers.
2. Check your browser configuration:
Internet Explorer Firefox
3. As a security precaution, PuTTY doesn't show your password as you type it. Just type carefully and press "enter".
4. If you have a software firewall installed, try disabling it as a test. The SSH is designed to get through most firewalls, but some software versions use application filtering. Be sure that yours allows PuTTY.exe to access the internet.
5. Are you connecting at work or school where the internet connection is proxied already? E-mail Support for more info.
What kind of payments do you accept?

Is there a way for the SSH tunnel connection remember my login info?
You can modify one of the .bat files with your username and password, and it will automatically log in for you. For instance, open server 5 .bat in a text editor and edit this line:
putty -D 1088 -P 80 -ssh vpn5.findnot.com
add this:
putty -D 1088 -P 80 -ssh vpn5.findnot.com -l username -pw password
Save and close. Now you will not have to enter your username/pass.

The PPTP VPN gives me an error 741. How can I fix it?
1. This error is server specific. Try the VPN on other servers.
2. In the properties of your VPN connecion uncheck the "Require Data Encryption" checkbox. The disadvantage of this is although your IP address is protected the connection is NOT encrypted. This will give you the same level of security as an anonymous proxy. Your IP address will still be replaced with ours.
3. Connect using the SSH tunnel instead of VPN
4. Connect using the openVPN option.
Can I send out bulk mail on your servers?
Using our VPN's, Proxy, or email service you will NOT be able to send out large commercial quantities of email, spam or legit. This includes:
* E-mail with high CC or BCC * Commercial mail * Unsolicited Commercial Mail * SPAM * Opt-in mail * Newsletters

My PPTP VPN connection drops. What can I do?
There is a auto-reconnect feature built that you can enable.
In the properties of your vpn connection, click on the "options" tab. Change the "Redial Attempts" to 99. Change the "Time between redial attempts" to 1 second. Last but not least select the option that says "Redial if line is dropped". Now if the line drops you will be notified right away and it will fix itself right away.
If too many packets are dropped by your isp, the internet, or our network you will loose your connection. Often this is caused by an overloaded network segment between your isp and our servers. Try using different servers:
Findnot Server List
If the connection drops on different servers in different regions then it is likely dropped packets by your ISP.
Sometimes the SSH tunnel can be more stable when packets get lost. Try using the SSH Tunnel instead of the vpn. It handles dropped packets better.
If you need VPN functionality instead of the SSH tunnel, Try the OpenVPN also.
I want to send anonymous email. How do I do that?
First of all as a member of FindNot you have an email account on our email server in Malaysia. This is web based email only. Your real IP address will not appear in any email you send. You will have 50 MB of storage space in the email account which can also be used for File storage.
Our service makes all free email, web based or pop3/smtp based anonymous! Once connected to our service you are using our ip address instead of yours and are thus anonymous. Go to any free email service, open an account, and start mailing. It is that easy.
If you are really concerned about privacy open up a free email account in another country to add extra security. If you are interested in a smtp/pop solution there are free smtp/pop services available too.
Remember to signup and only use the email account while connected to our service!

What the heck is PuTTY?
PuTTY is a client program for the SSH, Telnet and Rlogin network protocols. PuTTY.exe is third party software and is not affiliated with FindNot.com in any way. You can download it yourself here:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
It is provided with source code so you can be confident there are no back doors. For the truly paranoid you can compile it yourself from the source. ;-)

After entering my username/password, PuTTY shows me an error.
1. Check your username/password, they are case sensitive. 2. Try connecting to other servers. 3. Be sure that PuTTY has permission to connect to the internet in the application filters of your software firewall. In addition, the .bat files included in the SSH download utilize window's cmd.exe to start and configure putty.exe. Some firewalls will try to block cmd.exe as 'an application that starts an application that connects to the internet'. Try allowing cmd.exe also.

I get an RSA key warning when I log in to the SSH tunnel. What is it?
This warning is a part of the ssh program and nothing to be concerned about. You will see it once when you log in to a new server, and then if we change RSA keys you will see it again. We change the keys often, so you may see this warning from time to time on different servers.
How do I disconnect from your servers?
It depends on how you are connected. I'll assume you are using a Windows OS:
--->VPN using the Findnot.pbk: Doubleclick on the Findnot.pbk. The first option on the left of the window is 'Hang Up'. Choose it. If that option is not there, you are not connected to our servers.
--->VPN using manual setup: Doubleclick on the icon you clicked to start the connection. Choose 'Disconnect'.
--->SSH: Just close the 'vpnX.findnot.com-PuTTY' window. This will close the tunnel and your connection.
--->OpenVPN standard install: To disconnect, simply close the DOS window that controls the connection. In order to use the internet again, go to your network connections (Start => Connect To => Show All Connections), right click your default Internet connection and click 'Repair'.
---> OpenVPN using GUI interface: Right click the icon in your system tray, and choose the 'disconnect' option under the server you are connected to.

When I try to send email while connected to your service I get an error (or the message gets stuck in the outbox).
This typically happens because your ISP only allows access to their mail server from their own IP ranges (to prevent spamming).
When you are on our service you have an IP external to their system so it is rejected. But, if you think about it, using your ISPs mail server while connected to our service is counter-productive because your username with your ISP (not us) and the domain name of the ISP will be in the email. You dont want to route anonymous email through your own ISPs mail server anyway!
The best solution is to sign up for a free email account that supports pop3. Of course, you want to sign up for the free email account while connected to our service.

Using OpenVPN on Vista shows my IP address?
This typically happens when you do not start the OpenVPN GUI as 'administrator'.
First, completely close the OpenVPN GUI by right-clicking the OpenVPN icon in your system tray, and choose 'Exit'. Then restart OpenVPN by doing the following:
Go to Start->Computer->LocalDisk C: -> Program Files -> OpenVPN -> bin. Right-click the openvpn-gui.exe and choose 'Run as Administrator'. (You may have to repeat this step if you reboot your computer)
It says that my username/password is not correct!
Check your username and password carefully. Both are case sensitive for the PPTP VPN and OpenVPN. The Socks connection and SSH tunnel require you to ender both username and password as all lowercase.
If you are still unable to log in contact support@findnot.com. Be sure to include your FindNot username.
