FindNot News and Articles :: PuTTY Portable for Portable Privacy and SecurityPuTTY Portable for Portable Privacy and Security
Your secure, private surfing would not be complete without a portable way to access the internet privately! If you are a FindNot subscriber, you have access to each of our servers via SSH tunnel over port 80. To access the SSH tunnel, we provide a download of putty.exe, a popular open source ssh/telnet client from www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/. In the findnot download are several batch (.bat) files that are used to automatically configure putty, and connect to our servers.
PuTTY has always been able to be ran from a USB drive. The only issue was that it left entries in the registry of the host computer. It can be cleaned by either running 'putty -cleanup' from the command line ( see here http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.58/htmldoc/Chapter3.html#using-cleanup), or (for convenience) creating a .bat file with the command. As easy as this is, it can still create a privacy breach if you are using putty on a computer other than your own.
http://portableapps.com once again comes to the rescue with PuTTY Portable. PuTTY Portable runs conveniently from the Portable Apps launcher, and stores both the registry entries and the random seed file on your USB drive. Your privacy is kept safe!
The only issue will be the .bat files from the findnot download. If you open the .bat files using notepad, you will notice that the command calls for the application 'putty', which is putty.exe. In the PuTTY Portable version, the application is 'PuTTYPortable.exe'. To use the batch files with PuTTY Portable, for each server you want to connect to, you will need to copy and edit each .bat file and store it on your USB drive in the (Portable Drive Letter):\PortableApps\PuTTYPortable\ directory. Then open each .bat file using a text editor (notepad is fine) and change the line 'putty' to 'PuTTYPortable'. For instance, if you were connecting to server 7, the .bat file would look like:
@echo off echo SSH Tunnel Launched... You may shut this window now if you wish. echo It will close automatically when the SSH tunnel is closed. PuTTYPortable -D 1088 -P 80 -ssh vpn7.findnot.com
Save the file and close. To connect to our servers using PuTTY Portable, simply doubleclick on one of these files.
At the writing of this article, the only known issue concerning running PuTTY Portable is that PuTTY Portable will not run at the same time as a locally installed copy of PuTTY.
