Setup Instructions

First we would like to thank you for choosing FindNot.com. There are several different ways to connect to our servers. Each option offers security and anonymity, you should take a moment and review the description of each and choose the connection type that best fits your needs. Click on the links below to skip to a description of each, or simply scroll down:

PPTP VPN | SSH Tunnel | OpenVPN | Socks5 Proxy

You can always see what servers we have available by checking our server list page.

PPTP VPN

  • High Security
  • Easy, no software required
  • Protects all internet traffic, no application configuration necessary
  • connects with in one click
  • auto-reconnect if link fails

Supported OS:

The pptp vpn (virtual private network) is the easiest to setup and allows you to connect into our network and do all your internet activities from our network. Think of connecting to the vpn like coming into our "internet cafe" and using one of our computers. Anything you do does not reveal your identity because you are doing all your internet activities like web surfing from our computers, not yours. If you have ever used a dial-up internet service it is essentially the same thing except it is high speed (or as fast as your current internet connection). Actually you will notice that the setup procedure is almost the same as it is for setting up a dial-up. The only difference is that you will be entering our server name instead of your isp's phone number. We are essentially becoming your new ISP. Please note that you still have to connect to your current ISP before connecting into our service. The nice thing about the pptp vpn is that there is no software to install and once you are connected all your internet activities are protected. (Although for your convenience we have put together a small connection manager program you can download.) Another important advantage is that a vpn connection is encrypted so your isp cannot spy on you! The disadvantage is that you must disconnect when you want to use your real ip address from your ISP.

SSH Tunnel

  • Ultra-High Security
  • Application by Application protection
  • No data leaves computer if link fails

Supported OS:

This option is very similar to the PPTP VPN but is much more secure. This option has the highest security rating because in addition to protecting your ip and providing 128 bit SSH encryption, it does not use the PPTP protocol. Furthermore, if the link fails no data will leave your computer from the application being protected. On the other hand it will not "auto-reconnect" like the vpn or proxy. (There are some user-submitted scripts you can use to auto-reconnect if the connection fails. Check the setup instructions.) Additionally, the SSH tunnel can even be run right from a link on our website without installing it on your computer, or from a USB drive.

The SSH tunnel can penetrate almost any firewall because it runs over port 80. This option also scores high in security because it protects on an application level. Although this is not quite as convenient as the vpn which protects all internet traffic without making any application configuration changes, it protects against 3rd party logs from software like instant messengers and other "phone home" products. 3rd party logs can be used to associate your real ip and your protected ip. This is a very weak association because at any one time several hundred users are using the protected ip but for the ulta-security minded people this may be an issue.

Open VPN

  • High Security
  • Protects all internet traffic
  • no application configuration necessary

Supported OS:

The Open VPN is our choice for high anonymity and security. Not only is the connection encrypted between your computer and our server, but all internet traffic coming from your computer is rerouted through our server. No per-application configuration is necessary. The only dis-advantage is that the initial setup is a little more technical. Once configured, the connection is as easy as clicking a link and entering your password.

Socks5 Proxy

  • Medium Security
  • Application by Application protection
  • Auto Reconnect if link fails

Supported OS:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Linux

The proxy allows you to protect only the applications you configure to use our proxy. This can be an advantage if you still want to be able browse the internet from your real ip and our ip without connecting and disconnecting from our service. The disadvantage is that if the application you want to use wasn't built to be able to use proxies then you need to install a software program (called sockscap). Another disadvantage is that although your IP address is protected the connection is NOT encrypted.
