How It Works

This is a more technical explanation for those of you that are so inclined. If you do not understand everything on this page, relax the system is extremely user friendly and you need not understand all the details to remain anonymous on the internet in all of your activities.

About The Service

What we have is an anonymization service that allows you to use a network of 30 servers in seven different countries. Each server is configured to be a Socks Proxy, a SSH Proxy a PPTP VPN and OpenVPN. This enables you to connect to any of our servers in one of four ways thus ensuring that you can connect wherever you are even if you are behind a firewall at the workplace or at school. Upon joining the service you choose a user name and password to our VPN and proxy services. Once connected your entire internet traffic will flow through our secure servers making you anonymous. We never pass on your true IP address. You can read a mpre detailed explanation of our connection types here.

You can select which of our servers you wish to connect to and it only takes a few seconds to change servers. You can appear to be coming from 30 different IP addresses in seven different countries. Our IP addresses are on many different IP blocks and are changed frequently. We do not experience blocking and we do not engage in any form of censorship.

Free Anonymous Email Account

Included in your membership is an account on our secure email server which is located offshore. Communication between your computer and our email server can be set for encryption, 128 SSL just by checking a box. This means your ISP can not keep copies of your email like they like to do in their backups and these emails stay available in their backup files for decades. The email from our server does not have your real IP address in it just ours so it is anonymous.

File storage is also possible on our offshore email server. You are given 50 MB of storage space and are free to upload files onto the server in your allocated space which is inside your email account and is password protected. You can of course encrypt such files before loading them up for added security.

How Does The Anonymity Work?

All traffic leaves one of our given servers with the same external IP address. Thus the anonymity. All the traffic of many users becomes mingled together inseparably. Now when traffic leaves the server it also has a session id number associated with it so when the traffic gets answered or returned the server can route it back to the correct user. The session id has an internal IP addresses for the user and these internal IP addresses are variable and change frequently during the day. We are the only service to use variable IP internal addresses as far as we know. If someone gets your IP address while on the service from say a chat, a forum or an email it is will our IP address of the server you were using. If they try to attack you or something basing it on that IP address nothing will happen because the server will not be receiving a session id and internal IP address with the packets containing the attack, thus the server will be unable to deliver the packets and the attack will just time out without causing any harm to anyone. Thus our servers actually act as a hardware firewall protecting you greatly out there on the internet from all sorts of hacking and attacks.

When our VPN service is turned on all your internet traffic goes through us, you do not have to remember to route everything through a proxy. With the Socks Proxy and SSH Proxy it is application specific in that you must specify which applications are going to run through the proxy, or as we say be proxified. We suggest the use of a common freeware program called SocksCap to help facilitate this and it is basically a drag and drop program quite easy to use

Bandwidth and p2p

Some people cause abuse in the form of being a bandwidth hog. By this I mean they engage in activities on our server that entirely drains the life out of the server thus preventing others from using the server. First off remember you can be one of the others who can't use the server so if you want to run a program that lets 99 people download from you at the same time just remember if someone else started this same type of activity ten minutes before you, you would be unable to do anything on the server. We of course do allow uploading and downloading in a P2P environment but hey, let's be reasonable and remember there are other users too. There is always a price for anonymity. If you are wondering, when we get an alarm that a server is overloaded we go in and look around and that is how we find the bandwidth hogs.

When using our VPN or SSH Proxy servers your data is encrypted before it leaves your computer. It is then transported while encrypted over your regular ISP's line to our servers on the internet where it is then transmitted to its proper destination on the internet. All your ISP can "see" is an encrypted data stream going from you to our servers which means nothing, and tells them nothing. The data is encrypted with 128bit encryption, which is the same level of encryption used by online banking and e-commerce sites on the internet today. Your ISP has no idea what you did, what web sites you visited, who you sent email to, what you downloaded etc.

Free Proxies

In the past some of you may have used freely available anonymous proxy servers. As time goes on things become abused more and more on the internet. In recent years there has been a rash of phony anonymous proxies that are set up by malicious people who use the proxy to capture user names, passwords, credit card info, etc which they use for personal gain at your expense. These are called "Honey Pots". Such proxies unlike ours are open proxies in that passwords are not needed for access. Additionally who is to say they are not keeping log files and what might they do or not do with these log files. With our service you run no such risks and our proxies are not blocked as open proxies since they are password protected.

What About Firewalls?

You can use the service with a firewall. Our SSH Proxies will work through just about any firewall as long as port 80 is open. This is the web browsing port so if you can browse websites from behind the firewall you can use the service.

What About The Security Breach Reported by...

There are 'security alerts' circulating around the internet accusing us of being nonchalant about security flaws in our service. The software we use to create the connections is generic, and there are well known workarounds for these 'security breaches'. If you are concerned about a connection to one of our servers being dropped during a transaction like a download and your real ip address then being revealed, relax. We have 4 connection types ranging from secure to ultra secure, depending on your needs, and options to eliminate any 'security breaches'. You can read more here: FindNot Hacked?

Can I Use FindNot From Anywhere?

You can use the service from multiple computers but only one computer can be used by an account at one time, in other words we do not allow multiple simultaneous logins.

What Operating Systems Do You Support?

You can run the service with Windows, Mac or Linux. We have very limited support for mac. If you are not sure, check out the setup options here, or request a trial account by emailing support [at] findnot.com.
